It is a late Wednesday evening, my phone rings as I'm marking essays. I answer it.
"Miss Jessica? I'm sorry I called you at home but I need to talk to you." It is a student, one of my favourites, she's more like a little sister.
"That's okay, what's going on?" I'm actually grateful for the break from marking and she is a high-drama girl, so this should be interesting.
"I did something really bad."
I brace myself, knowing her history. "Alright, tell me. What did you do?"
"I need to tell you the whole story," she says and proceeds.
Long story short, she slept with a boy who later in front of her friends made derogatory remarks to her in front of all of his friends and before she could help it she slapped him hard across the face!
"I feel so bad Miss. Even his mother has never hit him and I didn't mean to. I just got really mad and it was like my hands lost control and I just whacked him. I couldn't help it!"
I had a really hard time not bursting out laughing. And then I had the joy of explaining that when boys say hurtful, jackass things like he did, girls can in fact slap them and it is okay. I congratulated her and told her she could apologize once for it but not to grovel and that he most certainly deserved it.
I love being a girl!
